Datuk Muhammad Azmi Mohd Zain, born on 3 August 1971 in Kelantan, is a distinguished figure in Malaysian civil service. Over the years, he has held various significant positions, including roles at the Public Service Department and the Ministry of Federal Territories. Notably, he served as President of Perbadanan Putrajaya from 1 October 2020 to 15 December 2021. Currently, he is the Director General of Lands and Mines.
Datuk Muhammad Azmi’s contributions to public service have been recognised with multiple awards, including the Kesatria Mahkota Wilayah in 2009 and the Panglima Mahkota Wilayah in 2018. He has also been honoured with the Anugerah Perkhidmatan Cemerlang on several occasions and the title of Mejar Kehormat Askar Wataniah in 2020.
In addition to his civil service roles, Datuk Muhammad Azmi has been actively involved in various professional and community organisations. He is a member of the Persatuan Perkhidmatan Tadbir dan Diplomatik (PPTD) and the Kelab Kebajikan dan Sukan Kementerian Wilayah Persekutuan, among others.
Since 4 January 2023, Datuk Muhammad Azmi has been serving as a Commission Member of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), where he recently stepped into the role of interim chairman. His extensive experience and contributions continue to influence Malaysia’s public administration landscape.
Biography
Datuk Muhammad Azmi Mohd Zain was born on 3 August 1971 in Kelantan, Malaysia. He is of Malay descent and follows the Islamic faith. His academic journey began at the University of Malaya (UM), where he completed a Bachelor of Economics with Honours in 1995. Building on his undergraduate studies, he pursued further education at the National University of Malaysia (UKM), obtaining a Master of Social Science in Development Science in 2013.
Datuk Muhammad Azmi's career in public service began in 1996 when he was appointed as an Assistant Director in the Economic Planning Unit (EPU) of the Prime Minister’s Department. Over the years, he has accumulated extensive experience across various governmental departments and ministries.
In January 2008, he assumed the role of Chief Assistant Secretary, Grade M48, in the Strategic Communication and Media Management Section, Corporate Communication Division, Office of the Chief Secretary at the Ministry of Federal Territories. His responsibilities in this position included managing strategic communications and media relations.
From July 2010 to April 2012, he served as an Administrative and Diplomatic Officer, Grade M52, in the Public Service Department of Malaysia, focusing on training and development. Following this, he was appointed as the Secretary of the Development Management Division, Grade M54, at the Ministry of Federal Territories from April 2012 to February 2016.
Datuk Muhammad Azmi's role progressed when he became the Secretary of the Development Management Division, Grade Utama C, at the Ministry of Federal Territories from February 2016 to January 2017. He then moved to the position of Secretary of the Socio-Economic Division, Grade Utama C, at the same ministry until September 2020.
In October 2020, he was appointed President of Perbadanan Putrajaya, a role he held until December 2021. His tenure was marked by significant contributions to the management and development of Putrajaya. Since December 2021, he has been serving as the Director-General of Lands and Mines, Grade Utama B, overseeing the operations of the Department of Lands and Mines.
Throughout his career, Datuk Muhammad Azmi has been recognised for his exemplary service. He received the Anugerah Perkhidmatan Cemerlang in 2001, 2004, 2009, and 2013. His contributions were further acknowledged with the conferment of the Kesatria Mahkota Wilayah in 2009 and the Panglima Mahkota Wilayah in 2018. In 2020, he was also honoured with the title of Honorary Major in the Territorial Army.
Datuk Muhammad Azmi is an active member of several professional and community organisations. He is a member of the Administrative and Diplomatic Services Association (PPTD) and the Welfare and Sports Club of the Ministry of Federal Territories. Additionally, he serves on the Socio-Development Committee of the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) and chairs the Sports Science and Coaching Panel of the Federal Territories Sports Council. He also chairs the Surau Committee of the Ministry of Federal Territories, reflecting his engagement in community and religious activities.
On 4 January 2023, Datuk Muhammad Azmi was appointed as a Commission Member of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) for a two-year term. His appointment followed the resignation of the previous interim chairman, Tan Sri Mohamad Salim Fateh Din. As the new interim chairman, he succeeded Datuk Dr Fadhlullah Suhaiman Abdul Malek, whose term ended in June 2022. His role at the MCMC highlights his continued influence in shaping Malaysia’s communications and multimedia policies.
