Summary

Established in 1949 under the Gujarat University Act, Gujarat University stands as a testament to the vision of leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Patel, Anandshankar Dhruv, Ganesh Vasudev Mavalankar, and Kasturbhai Lalbhai, who advocated for its inception in the 1920s. Initially conceptualised as a teaching and affiliating university, it has since evolved into a premier institution of higher education in India.

At Gujarat University, undergraduate programs are offered through its affiliating system, while postgraduate education is imparted directly by the university. With accreditation of B++ by NAAC, it maintains high standards of academic excellence. Over its more than six-decade-long journey, the university has witnessed the establishment of several other universities carved out of its jurisdiction, yet it remains the largest educational institution in Gujarat.

Catering to the academic needs of over two lakh students across 235 colleges, 15 recognised institutions, and 24 approved institutions, Gujarat University offers a diverse range of disciplines. Its 34 postgraduate departments and 221 postgraduate centres ensure coordinated and efficient instruction. Notably, the university introduced external examinations in the faculties of Arts and Commerce to accommodate working students and those unable to afford traditional university education, thus democratising access to higher learning.

Recognised for its phenomenal growth, Gujarat University is ranked 1st in Gujarat and 26th in India among public state universities, as per the prestigious Outlook-ICare India University Ranking 2019. Its organisational structure adheres to the Gujarat University Act, 1949, ensuring governance and administration in line with statutory provisions.

History

Gujarat University was established on 23 November 1949 under the Gujarat University Act, passed by the government of the then Bombay State. The inception of the university was propelled by recommendations from a committee led by Dr. C.D. Deshmukh, an esteemed economist and the first Indian to serve as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India. The formation of Gujarat University aimed to meet the higher education needs of the region, which was part of the Bombay State at the time.

The university commenced its operations by affiliating several colleges that were previously affiliated with Bombay University. Initially, it inherited 24 affiliated colleges, along with a significant number of students and faculty members. The early years focused on establishing administrative frameworks, and academic departments, and creating a robust infrastructure to support educational activities.

Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Gujarat University expanded its academic offerings to encompass a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes. The university established faculties in Arts, Science, Commerce, Law, Education, and Medicine. It also fostered research activities, setting up specialised research centres and promoting an environment conducive to academic inquiry.

Notable Developments in the 1970s and 1980s

The 1970s marked a period of significant growth in both infrastructure and academic scope. New buildings, libraries, laboratories, and student facilities were constructed to accommodate the increasing number of students and academic activities. The university began hosting various national and international seminars, workshops, and conferences, enhancing its academic reputation.

In the 1980s, Gujarat University modernised its curriculum and adopted new teaching methodologies. This period also saw the introduction of computer science and technology courses, aligning the university's offerings with the evolving technological landscape.

The 1990s brought substantial reforms in higher education across India, and Gujarat University was no exception. The university embraced these changes by introducing semester systems, credit-based courses, and continuous assessment methods. These reforms aimed to enhance the quality of education and make the evaluation process more transparent and efficient.

Technological Advancements and Modern Era

With the advent of the 21st century, Gujarat University made significant strides in incorporating technology into its academic and administrative processes. The university established an online portal for admissions, examinations, and result declarations, streamlining these processes and making them more accessible to students. Additionally, the use of ICT (Information and Communication Technology) in teaching and learning processes was promoted.

Gujarat University has placed a strong emphasis on research and innovation. It has established various research centres, including the Centre for Development Communication and the Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology, focusing on interdisciplinary research. The university also collaborates with national and international institutions to promote research activities and knowledge exchange.

Today, Gujarat University stands as one of the largest and most prestigious universities in the state of Gujarat.
