History

Hilton Worldwide Holdings Inc., also known as Hilton Worldwide, is an American multinational hospitality company that was founded in 1919 by Conrad Hilton. The company is headquartered in McLean, Virginia, and has more than 6,600 properties in 119 countries and territories worldwide, making it one of the largest hospitality companies in the world.

Conrad Hilton, a Texas businessman, purchased his first hotel, the Mobley Hotel, in Cisco, Texas, in 1919. In 1925, Hilton opened the first hotel in Dallas, Texas, which was named the Dallas Hilton. In 1943, Hilton became the first hotel company to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

In 1954, Hilton International was established to operate hotels outside of the United States, and in 1964, the first Hilton hotel outside of the United States was opened in Puerto Rico. In 1967, the company was renamed Hilton Hotels Corporation.

In the 1990s, Hilton Hotels Corporation expanded its brand portfolio through acquisitions and partnerships, including the acquisition of the Flamingo Las Vegas in 1999 and the acquisition of the Promus Hotel Corporation in 1999, which included the Embassy Suites, Hampton Inn, and Homewood Suites brands.

In 2007, the Blackstone Group acquired Hilton Hotels Corporation in a $26 billion leveraged buyout, taking the company private. In 2010, the company returned to the public markets with an initial public offering (IPO) on the New York Stock Exchange.

In 2017, the company changed its name to Hilton Worldwide Holdings Inc. to reflect its global reach and diverse portfolio of brands, which include Hilton Hotels & Resorts, Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts, Conrad Hotels & Resorts, Canopy by Hilton, Curio Collection by Hilton, DoubleTree by Hilton, Embassy Suites by Hilton, Hilton Garden Inn, Hampton by Hilton, Homewood Suites by Hilton, Home2 Suites by Hilton, and Hilton Grand Vacations.
