IKEA, founded in 1943 by Ingvar Kamprad in Sweden, began as a small mail-order business selling pens, picture frames, and other items. The company's name is an acronym derived from the founder's initials (I.K.), the first letters of his family farm, Elmtaryd (E), and the nearby village, Agunnaryd (A). From these humble beginnings, IKEA has evolved into one of the world's most prominent home furnishing retailers.

In the early 1950s, Kamprad shifted the company’s focus to furniture, inspired by a growing demand for affordable, stylish home furnishings. The first IKEA catalogue, introduced in 1951, featured a range of flat-pack furniture that was easy to transport and assemble, setting the company apart from traditional furniture retailers.
