Jamia Hamdard University

Jamia Hamdard University, located in New Delhi, was established in 1989 under the Hamdard Education Society. Its origins can be traced back to the early 1900s with the founding of a Unani clinic by Hakeem Abdul Hameed, which later evolved into a prominent institution for education and research. The university integrates traditional Unani medicine with modern education and offers a variety of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes in fields such as health sciences, pharmaceuticals, management, law, and humanities.

The history of Jamia Hamdard University traces back to 1906 when Hakeem Hafiz Abdul Majeed, a respected practitioner of Unani Medicine, established a small clinic in Delhi. He named it "Hamdard," meaning "sympathy for all and sharing of pain," with the aim of advancing the practice of traditional medicine into a scientific discipline. His vision was to provide effective healthcare solutions.

Hakeem Abdul Hameed, his son, expanded this vision by founding educational institutions that would promote Unani Medicine and highlight the contributions of Islam to Indian civilisation. In 1948, Hamdard transitioned from a commercial enterprise to a charitable wakf, aligning with Islamic principles of public charity, particularly in health and education.

A series of institutions were established under Hakeem Abdul Hameed’s leadership. In 1962, the Institute of History of Medicine and Medical Research was founded to promote education and research in medical history. The Indian Institute of Islamic Studies was established in 1963 to focus on the study of Islamic culture and civilisation's contributions to Indian society.

In 1963, Hamdard Tibbi College was founded in Old Delhi, which later relocated to the Jamia Hamdard campus in 1980. The Hamdard College of Pharmacy was established in 1972 to provide education in pharmacy.

In 1989, Jamia Hamdard was granted the status of a Deemed University by the Ministry of Human Resource Development. This marked the culmination of Hakeem Abdul Hameed’s vision of uniting various institutions into a cohesive educational entity.

Since its establishment as a university, Jamia Hamdard has broadened its academic offerings to include diverse fields such as Information Technology, Computer Applications, Business Management, Physiotherapy, and Occupational Therapy. The university also offers postgraduate and doctoral programs across various disciplines, supported by advanced facilities for research and learning.

Jamia Hamdard’s inauguration on August 1, 1989, was marked by the presence of Late Shri Rajiv Gandhi, the Prime Minister of India, who recognised the institution’s potential to empower the minority Muslim community in India. Hakeem Abdul Hameed’s contributions were recognised with the Padma Shri in 1965 and the Padma Bhushan in 1991.

Today, Jamia Hamdard is ranked among the top institutions nationally and internationally. It secured the 78th position in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2023, with notable rankings of 29th in medicine and 2nd in pharmacy. In the QS World University Rankings, Jamia Hamdard is placed between 1201–1400 globally and between 451–500 in the QS Asian University Rankings.

Jamia Hamdard University offers a range of undergraduate programs designed to provide students with a solid foundation in their chosen subjects. These three-to-four-year programs cover various fields, including business administration, technology, law, medicine, pharmacy, nursing, and the humanities. The university offers degrees such as Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS), Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm), Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Nursing, Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA), and Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech), with specialisations in areas like Computer Science, Information Technology, Civil Engineering, and Electronics. Other undergraduate programs include degrees in Arabic, Law, Biotechnology, Islamic Studies, Nutrition and Dietetics, and related health sciences fields.

At the postgraduate level, Jamia Hamdard provides specialised programs that equip students with advanced knowledge and skills in their respective fields. These programs typically span one to two years and include Doctor of Medicine (MD), Master of Surgery (MS), Master of Pharmacy (M.Pharm), Master of Business Administration (MBA) with various specialisations, Master of Computer Applications (MCA), Master of Laws (LL.M), Master of Arts (MA) in Islamic Studies, and Master of Science (M.Sc) in Nursing, Bioinformatics, and other disciplines. These programs allow students to deepen their expertise and advance their careers in their chosen fields.

For those interested in research and academic pursuits, Jamia Hamdard offers Ph.D. programs across a broad range of disciplines. In addition to degree programs, Jamia Hamdard offers diploma programs focused on developing specialised skills and practical training in specific areas. These shorter-duration programs include Diploma in Pharmacy (D.Pharm), Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology, Diploma in Optometry, Diploma in Medical Imaging Technology, Diploma in Operation Theatre Technology, Diploma in Dialysis Technology, Diploma in Cardiology Technology, and Diploma in Physician Assistant. These programs provide hands-on experience and industry-relevant skills, enhancing students' employability in healthcare and allied fields.

Jamia Hamdard University has earned recognition in several prominent global and regional rankings. In the QS World University Rankings (2023), the university is ranked between 1201 and 1400 globally, while in the QS Asia University Rankings (2023), it is placed between 451 and 500 in Asia. 

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings (2023) has ranked Jamia Hamdard between 601 and 800 worldwide, and in the Times Higher Education Asia Rankings (2022), it secured a position between 301 and 350 in Asia. Additionally, the university is ranked 351–400 in the Times Higher Education Emerging Economies Rankings (2022), reflecting its growing influence in emerging economies.

At Jamia Hamdard, the median package for BTech placements stood at INR 5.30 LPA, reflecting a promising trend for engineering graduates. Similarly, MBA placements reported a median package of INR 5.52 LPA, with a notable 16% increase in BPharm median package and a nearly 25% rise in BTech median package compared to the previous year. Moreover, out of 267 MBA students, a total of 162 were successfully placed, indicating a robust job integration rate and affirming the university's commitment to fostering career opportunities for its graduates.
