A business journalist, Juliette's research at Columbia University focuses on responsible AI deployment and ethical data exploration. Besides ‘The AI Dilemma’ she is the author of "33 Million People in the Room: How to Create, Influence, and Run a Successful Business with Social Networking", which was published in 2009 by Prentice Hall, Financial Times.
A graduate in Economics from Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto, and Finance and International Business from McGill University, Juliette is also the faculty at The New York University. She was the Miss Canada titleholder in 1989, the contest's first Black Canadian winner.
Biography
uliette Powell, born in Manhattan, New York, in 1971, embarked on a remarkable journey from a quiet high school student to an influential figure in the fields of media, technology, and ethics. She moved to Montreal, Quebec, at the age of eight and initially excelled in mathematics and science, simultaneously dedicating herself to swimming. Despite considering herself a shy and unpopular student, Juliette's life took an unexpected turn when she entered and won the 1989 Miss Canada Pageant, driven by a desire to challenge a perceived injustice in a prior beauty pageant.
Juliette's career began to flourish after her Miss Canada reign. She joined MusiquePlus in 1992 as a VJ while also pursuing studies in finance and business at McGill University. Her role expanded as she became the host of MusiquePlus' weekly dance music show, Bouge de là! In 1996, she moved to Toronto, where she continued her career at MuchMusic, hosting shows like Electric Circus and French Kiss while studying economics at the University of Toronto.
In 1999, Juliette Powell entered the world of business reporting with CablePulse 24. She simultaneously founded Powell International Entertainment Inc. (PIE Inc.), a media and consulting company that produced features with notable figures such as Nelson Mandela, Sir Richard Branson, Tom Cruise, and Prince Charles, among others. Her work extended beyond media as she played an advisory role with international institutions, including the United Nations, World Economic Forum, and the World Bank.
In 2021, she joined New York University's Interactive Telecommunications Program faculty, where she teaches courses at the intersection of media, technology, and ethics, further solidifying her status as a prominent figure in the field.
