After graduating from Brown, Dr. Mitchell worked as a high school mathematics teacher in New York City. Her interest in AI deepened, and she became determined to work with Hofstadter. After persistent efforts, including tracking down his contact details and making repeated phone calls, she succeeded in securing a position as an intern on Hofstadter’s research project.
In 1984, Dr. Mitchell joined the University of Michigan to pursue a Ph.D. under the supervision of Douglas Hofstadter and John Holland. Her doctoral work focused on developing the Copycat cognitive architecture, a model for high-level perception and conceptual slippage in analogy-making. This research became the foundation of her dissertation, which she completed in 1990.
