History
Newcastle University Business School began as part of Newcastle University’s long-standing tradition of business and economics education. The University itself has delivered business-related teaching for over 100 years. However, the Business School was formally established in 2002 as a dedicated unit focused on business, management, and economics education and research.
In its early years, the School concentrated on developing undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in core areas such as business management, accounting, and finance. It aimed to strengthen its academic offering by integrating research-led teaching and expanding industry collaborations. As demand for postgraduate business education grew, the School introduced MBA programmes and executive education to cater to professionals seeking career advancement.
Over the next decade, Newcastle University Business School worked on improving its infrastructure, curriculum, and faculty strength. A key milestone was the move into a purpose-built facility at 5 Barrack Road, Downing Plaza, in 2012. This development brought together teaching, research, and enterprise functions under one roof. The new building provided facilities designed specifically for business education, including lecture theatres, seminar rooms, and collaboration spaces.
Accreditation became a major focus of the School. It received recognition from the three main international accreditation bodies—AACSB, AMBA, and EQUIS—achieving the 'triple accreditation' status. This placed the School in a small group of business schools worldwide meeting all three standards.
The School expanded its international collaborations with universities such as Monash University in Australia and Xiamen University in China. It also built relationships with more than 300 businesses, contributing to applied research, consultancy, student placements, and curriculum input. The School has been involved in leading national projects like the Creative Policy and Evidence Centre (CEPEC), funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council.
The research focus of the School includes accounting, economics, entrepreneurship, marketing, and operations. It employs over 200 staff members from more than 30 countries and engages in global, national, and regional research addressing business, policy, and social challenges. The School introduced postgraduate research pathways in business and management, finance, economics, entrepreneurship, and marketing.
The MBA programme is now globally ranked, featuring in the top 200 worldwide and top 50 in Europe. The School also ranks in specialist areas like supply chain management and marketing. Its students come from 82 countries, and the alumni network includes over 34,000 individuals in more than 150 countries.
As of 2025, Newcastle University Business School continues to operate as a triple-accredited institution. It is part of a Russell Group university and focuses on responsible business education, sustainability, diversity, and inclusive research. The School delivers undergraduate, postgraduate, and research degrees and engages with government, business, and academic partners across the world. It remains committed to developing education and research that contribute to fairer and more sustainable business practices.
