History
Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE), initially known as Columbia Pictures Entertainment, was established on 18 December 1987. It originated when the Coca-Cola Company, which owned Columbia Pictures since 1982, decided to spin off its entertainment assets. These assets were merged with TriStar Pictures, creating Columbia Pictures Entertainment Inc. Coca-Cola held 49% ownership, while the remaining shares were split between Coca-Cola shareholders and TriStar’s stakeholders.
In 1989, Sony Corporation of Japan acquired Columbia Pictures Entertainment for $4.9 billion, marking its significant entry into Hollywood. The acquisition included Columbia Pictures, TriStar Pictures, and their associated television and film assets. This acquisition was overseen by Norio Ohga, then Sony’s President and CEO. The studio was renamed Sony Pictures Entertainment in 1991.
In the 1990s, SPE expanded its operations by creating Sony Pictures Classics, focusing on independent and arthouse films. During this period, Sony merged Columbia Pictures and TriStar Pictures into a single entity, Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Group. The television division also underwent reorganisation, giving rise to Screen Gems as a mid-budget film production unit.
In 2005, SPE led a consortium to acquire Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) in a $4.8 billion leveraged buyout. This added MGM’s vast film library to Sony’s portfolio. In 2012, SPE shifted its focus towards television, cutting back on its film slate. It also signed an agreement with Marvel Studios in 2015, allowing Spider-Man to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, enhancing the franchise's global appeal.
In the 2020s, SPE embraced digital transformation, forming licensing agreements with Netflix and Disney+. It acquired Crunchyroll in 2021, expanding its footprint in the anime industry. In 2024, SPE reportedly showed interest in acquiring Paramount Global and acquired Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, re-entering theatre ownership.
Currently, SPE produces films, television programmes, and digital content through its various subsidiaries. It operates globally, leveraging partnerships and strategic acquisitions to maintain its position as a leading entertainment company. As of November 2024, Sony Group Corporation has a market capitalization of approximately USD 117.22 billion.
