Stephen Allen Schwarzman is the chairman, CEO, and co-founder of Blackstone Group, one of the world’s largest private equity firms, managing over $1 trillion in assets as of September 2024. Since founding the firm in 1985 with Peter G. Born in Philadelphia in 1947, Schwarzman attended Yale University, where he earned a BA in 1969, and later received an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1972.

Stephen Allen Schwarzman was born on 14 February 1947 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to a Jewish family. His father, Joseph Schwarzman, owned a dry goods store, and his mother, Arline Schwarzman, supported the family at home. Growing up in Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania, Schwarzman demonstrated entrepreneurial skills early in life. At the age of 14, he launched a lawn-mowing business, employing his younger twin brothers to assist while he focused on client acquisition.

Schwarzman completed his schooling at Abington Senior High School in 1965. He then enrolled at Yale University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1969. During his time at Yale, he became a member of the Skull and Bones society and founded the Davenport Ballet Society. Following his undergraduate studies, Schwarzman joined the U.S. Army Reserve briefly before attending Harvard Business School, where he earned an MBA in 1972.

After graduating from Harvard, Schwarzman joined Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette, an investment bank, before moving to Lehman Brothers. At Lehman, he rose to become managing director and head of global mergers and acquisitions by the age of 31. His work at Lehman provided him with deep insights into investment banking and corporate deal-making.

In 1985, Schwarzman co-founded The Blackstone Group with Peter G. Peterson. Additionally, in 2024, he was appointed an Honorary Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire (KBE) for his services to philanthropy.
