Strapi releases v3.6, adding free content internationalization in its Community Edition. Strapi, the open-source headless CMS known for its flexibility and developer-first design, launches version 3.6 with a key new feature: content internationalization (i18n). Offered free in the Community Edition, this feature lets users create and manage content in multiple languages and locales without restrictions. 

Organisations can now tailor and personalise their messages based on both language and geographic location, improving the relevance and reach of their digital content worldwide. This update strengthens Strapi’s role as a powerful platform for global content management, supporting seamless localisation and boosting engagement across diverse audiences.

At the recent StrapiConf event, Strapi previewed the upcoming version 4, slated for release around August. This major update will feature a redesigned system and enhanced core APIs to facilitate easier creation and maintenance of plugins by the broader ecosystem, continuing to foster community-driven innovation.

Multilingual content creation with locale precision

Strapi’s internationalization feature enables users to build multilingual websites or applications with detailed locale support. A locale can represent a language and a specific country or region, examples include “en-GB” for English in Great Britain or “fr-CA” for French in Canada. This level of granularity allows content to be hyper-focused and accurate for each target audience, improving relevance and connection.

Beyond simple translation, internationalization in Strapi supports localisation by tailoring content to the language and location of users. For instance, an e-commerce platform can select which product pages appear in French, Portuguese, or Mandarin, facilitating effective global digital strategies that work across borders.

Efficient workflows for managing localised content

Managing content in several languages is made straightforward through Strapi’s user-friendly admin panel. Users can filter and browse content entries by locale, easily switching between languages in list views to access related content. When editing, content can be copied or pasted between locales without the need to open multiple tabs.

Strapi also allows setting a default locale that displays first when adding new content or viewing lists, streamlining the content creation and editing process. Additionally, fields or entire content types can be marked as non-localised, ensuring content that should remain consistent across all languages is automatically synchronised, saving time when updating.

Role-based access control extends to localisation, letting administrators assign granular Create, Read, Update, and Delete (CRUD) permissions per locale. Different users, translators, marketers, editors, or country managers, can have tailored access rights. Integrated with Strapi’s Draft & Publish system, this ensures secure and controlled workflows for editing and publishing content in multiple languages.

API enhancements to support internationalization

The Strapi API has been updated to accommodate content localisation. When internationalization is enabled, a “localizations” field is added to every content type. Developers can specify the locale when creating new entries via the API or create new locale variants from existing content, supporting flexible multi-language content management in applications.
