History
Banaras Hindu University (BHU) traces its origins to the visionary efforts of Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, Annie Besant, and other prominent figures in the early 20th century. The idea of establishing a university in Varanasi was first publicly articulated by Malaviya during the 21st Conference of the Indian National Congress in December 1905. Malaviya's vision was rooted in the recognition of India's socio-economic challenges and the need for advanced education in science, technology, and Indian culture.
In 1911, Malaviya published a detailed plan for the university, emphasising its residential character and focus on research and education. He sought government recognition for the university and garnered support from Indian nationalists, educationists, and philanthropists. Annie Besant, a prominent Theosophist and Indian Home Rule league joined forces with Malaviya in April 1911 to realise the vision of the university.
The Hindu University Society was registered by Malaviya in November 1911 to mobilise support and funds for the university's establishment. Significant contributions came from the Kashi Naresh Prabhu Narayan Singh, Rameshwar Singh Bahadur of Raj Darbhanga, and other noble houses of the United Provinces.
The Banaras Hindu University Bill was introduced in the Imperial Legislative Council in March 1915 and passed in October 1915. On February 4, 1916, the foundation stone of the main campus was laid by Lord Hardinge, the then Viceroy of India, marking the official establishment of BHU. Academic sessions began shortly thereafter, with classes initially held at the Central Hindu School while the main campus was under construction.
Sunder Lal was appointed the first vice-chancellor of BHU, overseeing the early development of the university. The campus expanded rapidly, supported by donations from individuals like the Nizam of Hyderabad, and Mir Osman Ali Khan.
Throughout its history, BHU has remained committed to its founding principles of promoting knowledge, research, and societal welfare. It has evolved into a premier institution of higher learning, recognised nationally and internationally for its academic excellence and contributions to society. Today, BHU stands as a testament to the transformative power of education and the enduring legacy of its visionary founders.
