History

Draper University, founded in 2012 by venture capitalist Tim Draper, is a private, for-profit school based in San Mateo, California. It was established to provide practical entrepreneurial education.

The idea for the university began in 2011 when Tim Draper purchased the historic Hotel Benjamin Franklin building, constructed in 1927, to serve as the campus for the new institution. The first session of Draper University took place in 2012 with 40 students, focusing on developing entrepreneurial skills through an immersive, hands-on approach.

In 2013, Draper University partnered with Arizona State University (ASU) to offer a sixteen-week semester program that provided students with 15 course credits. This partnership marked the school’s transition from an unaccredited institution to one recognised for its educational contributions. The program blended Draper’s innovative teaching methods with ASU’s academic resources.

In 2015, Draper University gained broader visibility through the reality television series Startup U.
