History

Startup Grind was founded in 2010 in Silicon Valley by Derek Andersen and a group of entrepreneurs who were facing similar challenges in launching their startups. The initial goal was to create a community where founders could come together to share advice, insights, and experiences about starting and growing a business. The informal meetings soon gained popularity, evolving from small gatherings into a local movement, attracting founders and experts from different industries.

In 2012, the first official Startup Grind chapter was launched in Silicon Valley, and the community quickly began expanding internationally. By 2013, Startup Grind had grown to include chapters in cities like Los Angeles, New York, London, Tel Aviv, and Beijing, bringing together founders, investors, and industry experts.

A significant milestone came in 2014 when Startup Grind partnered with Google for Startups. This partnership provided the organisation with additional resources and support, allowing it to expand further and reach more entrepreneurs globally. By 2015, the organisation had over 150 chapters worldwide, each hosting regular events featuring successful entrepreneurs, investors, and business leaders who shared their knowledge with local startup communities.

In 2016, Startup Grind launched its first Global Conference in Silicon Valley. The event brought together thousands of startup founders, investors, and thought leaders from around the world. This annual conference has since become a key event in the tech and startup ecosystem, offering attendees opportunities to network, learn, and collaborate.

The organisation continued to grow steadily, reaching over 400 chapters by 2018 and covering more than 120 countries. During this period, Startup Grind expanded its offerings to include membership programs, which provided startups with access to mentorship, resources, and funding opportunities.

By 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic posed challenges for global events, but Startup Grind adapted by shifting its events online. This allowed the community to continue connecting and supporting startups despite global restrictions. The virtual events maintained the organisation’s mission of providing education and opportunities for growth.

In 2021, Startup Grind continued to expand its online presence, while also resuming in-person events in cities where restrictions were lifted. By 2023, the organisation had grown to over 600 chapters, serving a global community of more than 5 million members. Startup Grind’s focus remains on supporting startups from bootstrapped beginnings to Series A rounds, offering a platform for founders to connect with investors, mentors, and other entrepreneurs.

Today, Startup Grind continues to organise local events, its flagship annual Global Conference in Silicon Valley, and various other initiatives aimed at helping startups grow. The organisation has built partnerships with major global brands that share its mission of supporting entrepreneurs, and it continues to be a significant force in the global startup ecosystem.
