Eight Billion Humans. Eight Billion AI Agents. And Now?

Dinis Guarda - Citiesabc - AI.DNA - Humans + Cities + AI Soul Convergence - Newsletter #33

citiesabc.com with Businessabc.net intelligenthq.com wisdomia.ai

Dear Friends,

We are entering a moment in history when humanity may no longer be the most numerous intelligent actor in the digital world.

There are eight billion of us. Soon, there could be billions of AI agents working beside us, for us, and increasingly, without us. They will negotiate, research, create, transact, manage companies, make decisions and communicate with other machines at a speed and scale no human organisation has ever experienced.

This could become the greatest expansion of human capability in history. AI as our co-intelligence: billions of digital collaborators amplifying what individuals, businesses and societies can achieve.

But there is another possibility.

What happens when our digital collaborators become autonomous economic and social actors? When an AI agent trusts another AI agent more readily than it trusts a human? When machines begin coordinating, making decisions and shaping infrastructure faster than our laws, cybersecurity systems and institutions can understand what is happening?

The defining AI question is therefore changing. It is no longer simply “How intelligent can AI become?”

It is becoming: how do eight billion humans remain in control of a world increasingly populated by eight billion, or perhaps eighty billion, AI agents?

And if intelligence becomes abundant, autonomous and machine-to-machine, what exactly will remain uniquely human?

Editorial highlight

Eight Billion Humans. Eight Billion AI Agents. And Now?

AI agents may already be operating at a scale comparable to the human population, while governance, cybersecurity and accountability systems remain far behind.

From autonomous agents communicating with one another and escaping controlled environments to the growing risk of agent swarms, covert coordination and infrastructure compromise, the article examines what happens when billions of goal-driven digital entities begin acting with increasing independence.

With AI spending projected at $2.59 trillion in 2026 and only 11% of organisations currently running agents in production, the challenge is no longer simply how powerful AI agents will become, but whether our security and governance systems can scale fast enough to control them.

Co-Intelligence: Living and Working with AI by Ethan Mollick

What does it really mean to work, create and think alongside artificial intelligence? Co-Intelligence: Living and Working with AI by Ethan Mollick explores how generative AI is already reshaping the way we learn, work, innovate and make decisions. Drawing on research, experiments and practical examples, Mollick argues that AI should be approached not simply as a tool, but as a new form of collaborative intelligence, one that can act as a co-worker, tutor, coach and creative partner. The book offers a practical framework for understanding both the opportunities and limitations of AI while asking how humans can use these systems without losing the judgement, creativity and responsibility that remain uniquely ours.
