Charlie Lee is a computer scientist born in 1977 to Chinese parents in Ivory Coast. At the age of 13, he moved to the United States, where he completed his education. Lee holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in computer science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), graduating in 2000.

Charlie Lee worked at various companies throughout his career. He spent nearly six years at Google, contributing to projects such as ChromeOS, YouTube Mobile, and Play Games. During this period, Lee became interested in Bitcoin and blockchain technology. In October 2011, he created Litecoin, a cryptocurrency based on the Bitcoin protocol. Litecoin was designed to facilitate smaller transactions, making it a more accessible alternative to Bitcoin. He released Litecoin publicly after mining 150 coins.

Charlie Lee left Google to join Coinbase in 2013, a prominent cryptocurrency exchange, where he worked as Director of Engineering until 2017. His tenure at Coinbase ended just before Litecoin was adopted by the platform.

Charlie Lee donated most of his Litecoin holdings due to concerns about a potential conflict of interest in December 2017, though he retained a few coins for their physical collectable value.

Currently, Charlie Lee is the Managing Director of the Litecoin Foundation, a role he has held since 2016. He focuses on promoting the adoption of Litecoin and advancing blockchain technology. Lee also serves as a board member at Valkyrie and BTCS Inc., companies involved in cryptocurrency and blockchain innovation.

He aimed to address some of Bitcoin's limitations, such as transaction speed, volume, and mining accessibility. Litecoin used a different mining algorithm, Scrypt, which allowed more people to mine the currency with basic hardware. Unlike Bitcoin, which had already grown in complexity, Litecoin aimed to make the mining process more democratic.

Litecoin quickly gained recognition as one of the top cryptocurrencies, earning a reputation as "silver to Bitcoin's gold." During this period, Lee continued to work at Google but also became involved in the growing cryptocurrency community. In 2013, Lee left Google to join Coinbase, one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges, as the Director of Engineering. His leadership in this role helped Coinbase grow, but in 2017, Lee decided to focus solely on Litecoin and stepped down from his position at Coinbase.

Lee founded the Litecoin Foundation in 2016, a non-profit organisation focused on promoting Litecoin’s adoption and development. As Managing Director, Lee has been instrumental in driving Litecoin’s success. His vision was to ensure Litecoin could be used for smaller, everyday transactions, while Bitcoin remained more suited for larger, high-value transactions. Lee's efforts in spreading awareness and working with developers have solidified Litecoin’s place in the cryptocurrency market.

In December 2017, Lee made a significant decision to sell or donate all of his personal Litecoin holdings. He stated this was to avoid any conflicts of interest, as he believed his ownership of the currency could affect public perception of his involvement with Litecoin. Despite selling his holdings, Lee remained fully committed to the Litecoin project and continues to work on its development through the Litecoin Foundation.

In 2024, Charlie Lee remains an influential figure in the cryptocurrency space. Through his role at the Litecoin Foundation, he continues to work on the adoption and development of Litecoin.
